Don’t Start None, Won’t Be None | Sean Carroll.

terrific blogpost about DN Lee, She simply declined to post for free on BiologyOnline and is called a whore by the editor.

Quote from Seans post Biology Online is a purportedly respectable site, part of the Scientific American “Partners Network.”  (italics are mine) When she blogs about it on her SciAm hosted blog, her blogpost is removed I heard about this story through twitter. Fern Riddell captured my thoughts on it in a way I never could. So I storified it

International Women’s Day – Badass ladies from history! (with images, tweets) · greg_jenner · Storify.

Today the #inspiringwomen went binkers and it was so much fun to se the huge number of really inspiring women One of the most prolific was Greg Jenner and he storified it.

Myself I tweeted all my own heroes (ncluding the curie-joliot dynasty)  and all female science nobel prize winners. Loved doing it – Just exceeded my tweet limit for the hour 🙂

Funny how gender never came up during Bernanke’s nomination. Or Greenspan’s. Or Volcker’s.

The Steubenville Case – When Will Women Start to Matter?

I found this through twitter. Those boys did loose their future, they threw it away. They only have themselves to blame for that. The girl is still being blamed and haunted. She too lost her future. The difference? Those boys took it from her. They felt invincible and bigger than the world. They feel sorry for themselves that their victim refused to remain a victim and stood up to be counted.
That girl in the Steubenville case is a hero, she deserves to be counted and heard.
PS the anonymous people that helped the girl are now facing jail. About 4 times what the rapist got, just for showing what a botched job the police did and just because they cared about an innocent woman. More on that in the related articles

Crates and Ribbons

In the aftermath of the trial of Richmond and Mays, Megan Carpentier writes in yesterday’s Guardian, “Rape is unique in US society as a crime where the blighted future of the perpetrators counts for more than the victim’s.”

Indeed, this is an apt observation, given the sickening way in which CNN, among others, reported on the verdict two days ago. Given the anger this had sparked on blogs and other social media, you’ve probably come across it by now, but just in case you haven’t, here’s what CNN had to say about Mays and Richmond’s being found guilty of rape:

Reporter Poppy Harlow: “I’ve never experienced anything like it, Candy. It was incredibly emotional, incredibly difficult even for an outsider like me to watch what happened as these two young men that had such promising futures — star football players, very good students — we literally watched as they…

Two women in politics

Two women in politics thatdeserve a lot of our admiration today.

One of them was primeminister of Australia. Today she lost the vote to Rudd. I do admire her a lot. So sad to see her go as prime-minister. She is awesome and this shows why and what she is up against in parliament in Australia

Julia Gillard’s misogyny speech – YouTube.

The other one just filibustered the whole of Texan senate to save the abortion rights of women I’d never heard of her before, but the woman has guts and a back. The cheering for her on the public area is worth looking up. Republicans even went as far as inveting time travel to get the bill passed anyway. As it was streamed live they could not hold on to that deceit and they lost. Wendy Davis now is forever known for her stamina. I say Wendy for president

FBrape

I haven’t had time to comment on the FBrape campaign on my own website yet. Been busy on twitter and work FBrape is a wonderful campaign that also has left me with some things to ponder Mainly my earlier post on Dove

As much as I liked the Dove campaign then, their response (or lack thereof) to this open letter to facebook has left a very sour aftertaste in my mouth Dove were asked multiple times to take a stance for women, because of their women empowerment marketing. Yet they chose not to take that stance publicly other than saying shees yeah it is really bad. Maybe they did something the the background persuading facebook to answer, but they did not join the campaign. What a missed chance for them and really making me think that their girlsunstoppable and woman self assurance are more than just a marketing ploy to relieve me of my money.

I am not buying dove anymore, because I am not buying their campaign intention anymore. They lost me because to me it seems it was and is all about them money, not really about empowering women

The power of the media: putting women in the frame

The power of the media: putting women in the frame | Women in Leadership | Guardian Professional.

This article is spot on. The womans room and any database with female experts is just that. It sort of gives the media, that claim that they cannot find female experts, a nice easy place to look for them.

They are there and now they do not have to do much research to find them Besides if female experts look for kindred spirits what is wrong with that? It is called networking and men have been doing this for centuries, but because women do it is all of a sudden is weird?
